All Things Considered has a must listen to story today (which just finished on the air and so there is as yet no audio link).  It has to do with the apparent control of the publication of dissenting articles in scientific journals and the silencing of dissenting voices.

It Must Be Book Day…

Posted by: Jim on: 11/25/2009

Every now and then it seems as though books and book notices all come at once.  For instance, while wandering around the book hall at SBL I happened across someone who mentioned a forthcoming volume by the always delightful John Day, but without specifics beyond the concept.
So I asked John and he replied, in part, [...]

Exodus: Eerdmans Critical Commentary

Posted by: Jim on: 11/25/2009

A brand new addition to the field of Exodus studies has appeared in Thomas Dozeman’s Exodus.

In this volume Thomas Dozeman presents a fresh translation of the Hebrew text of Exodus along with a careful interpretation of its central themes, literary structure, and history of composition. He explores two related themes in the formation of the [...]

In Bible and Interpretation. It’s a brief summary of his fairly recent Altes Testament und christliche Kirche: Versuch der Aufklärung.
It’s vintage Gerd, which means that those who like his stuff will probably like it and those who don’t, won’t.

Gloucestershire Development

Paul Bowler, the person, it seems, in the business office responsible for urging the sacking of Pietersen and others, will ‘not be carrying out his duties till further notice’.
Perhaps – then – I was wrong to be pessimistic. More as more happens. Let’s just all hope that the University has come to its [...]

More Shroud of Turin Nonsense

Posted by: Jim on: 11/21/2009

A Vatican researcher has rekindled the age-old debate over the Shroud of Turin, saying that faint writing on the linen proves it was the burial cloth of Jesus. Experts say the historian may be reading too much into the markings, and they stand by carbon-dating that points to the shroud being a medieval forgery. [...]

I’ve Made It To Houston

Posted by: Jim on: 11/20/2009

With no problems at all.  The flight to New Orleans is supposed to be ontime (leaving in about an hour).  In the meanwhile, here’s a photo I snapped in Knoxville before departure.

So while I wait I’ll drink my Earl Grey and check email and watch for any SBL looking types at the gate. More [...]

Give it a look over here.  With thanks to Rick for telling me about it.

Eric Cline on the Garden of Eden

Posted by: Jim on: 11/18/2009

Chapter One of Eric’s book on the bible has been made available by both the good graces of his publisher and the folk at Bible and Interpretation.
Give it a look, and then read the whole book.

Homosexuality, The Bible and the Rabbis

Posted by: Jim on: 11/17/2009

That’s the title of a new essay by Charles David Isbell at Bible and Interpretation.
It’s a fine essay.  And I think quite accurate.  The Sodom story in Genesis certainly is more concerned about the issue of hospitality than it is sexuality.  There’s no doubt about that.
