Exactly what I was doing 8 years ago on 9/11. I was driving home from a Historical Jesus class I was teaching at the local community college and I had the radio on in the car. It was surreal. One plane had hit the WTC and then another and then the Pentagon and then another crashed… I remember being overwhelmed with a sense of sorrow and uncertainty. Would there be more? What did it mean?
When I got home I did nothing but watch the news. All day. It was shocking.
That night we held a community prayer service for all the victims and their families.
I don’t think I’ll forget any of it as long as I live. I always wondered why people alive in 1941 spoke of Pearl Harbor with such a sense of immediacy even years later. Now I know. The wound is still open from 9/11.

I was sitting in ethics class. We were all dismissed and I went home and sat glued to the tv. What a horror…

I was driving through a tunnel in DC headed towards National Airport(a couple of miles away from the Pentagon) when I heard the boom. Our house was about 13 blocks from the Capitol, so I wound up driving back into DC as everyone else was pouring out. Just as I drove between the Capitol and Union Station, I heard 2 more booms. I thought a major attack was on, but these “explosions” turned out to be the sonic booms from fighter jets leaving Andrews AFB for Pennsylvania’s plan. I too sat watching TV in stunned shock.

This is well said, Jim. It was our first day of class, and I had no idea what had happened until students showed up for my 9:00 class and told me about it. At that point we didn’t know if it had been an accident or what, and (to my memory) the second plane hadn’t hit. So, I went ahead with the class (going over the syllabus). From that point on, the rest of the day is mostly a blur. The internet was completely jammed so I went home to watch TV with my wife, and the disbelief persists even to this day.

It was afternoon here, and I was just going out to take a women’s fellowship when the first report came in. We thought it was an accident. At the end of the meeting, my son was there to tell me it was a deliberate attack. I called the ladies together again, told them what had happened (some were elderly, most lived alone; we didn’t want anyone just walking into that), and spent some time in prayer. I spent the rest of the afternoon watching, and sending an email to friends we have in NY. A few weeks later we heard from a friend who had intended visiting the WTC that morning, but had got up late. She’d have been at the top – instead, she saw it all from her hotel.
It was one of those events which changes everything into before and after, and has affected folk in every part of the world.
