Bibliobloggers And The SBL: Affiliation

I’m very pleased to announce, in conjunction with Kent Richards, Executive Director of the SBL, that

Bibliobloggers as a group have become affiliated with the Society of Biblical Literature. We look forward to partnering at our North American and international meetings every year.

This partnership will make possible the fostering of biblical scholarship and communication among members of both groups. The affiliation will enable Bibliobloggers to meet and hold sessions in conjunction with SBL meetings.  Individual bibliobloggers who are members of the Society of Biblical Literature and who wish to identify themselves as affiliates of the Society may post this ‘badge’ on their blog.

I want to thank Jim and his colleagues for their efforts. This is a partnership long overdue, and it’s great to see it come to fruition.

Likewise, I want to thank Kent for his efforts.   As he suggests, this is a partnership that has been a while in the making and it’s great to see it come to pass.

In fact, Mark Goodacre and I spoke about something like this as long ago as the SBL meeting in Philadelphia when the first ever blogger session was held.  I think I can speak for Mark here and say that this is something we have both long desired.  And I want to thank Scott Bailey for developing the awesome logo.

  1. This is good news, Jim. So, we will be able to get information posted in the program book about meeting times? Will there be panel sessions, etc.?

This is actually one of the best things that could happen to even up the “gender gap” everyone has been talking about. The practice of biblioblogging will be more visible and (hopefully) considered a more legitimate part of our professional activity. This will increase participation among those who may feel reluctant to do anything that doesn’t actively advance their career, women and minorities included.

    • yes bryan. now if bloggers wish to have a session all they need do is submit their request and space will be made available.

  2. Thanks to all! This is great.

  8. [...] Jim West and others have noted the affiliation between bibliobloggers and the Society of Biblical Literature. You can also read the note by Kent Richards in the SBL forum. I’m still not entirely sure what the implications are of such an affiliation, but I do think it is something that should excite us. This represents a recognition from SBL that what we do on biblioblogs works hand in hand with the mission of SBL: to foster biblical scholarship. That’s why most of us blog. So I’m happy to hear about this new affiliation and I look forward to seeing how it affects things. There’s also a badge for bibliobloggers to express this newly forged affiliation, but unfortunately it’s a little bulky and aesthetically challenged, so I probably won’t sport it on my sidebar: [...]
