You’re right, that is an odd choice. There isn’t much by way of ruins, just 2 single use buildings. I would like to go to the southern wilderness, though. We didn’t go down there during my (only, alas) trip to the region.
I listed the texts from there as one of my top-5 extra-biblical sources, so I’m with you on the site, but I’d probably rather visit Khirbet el-Qom, Qumran, or something.
