Is, without question, Rolf Rendtorff’s ‘The Canonical Hebrew Bible‘. This volume has it all, including, but not limited to, thoroughness in its treatment of the subject matter, coherence, accessibility to the beginning and intermediate student, a fine style, and a fair price. It also makes use of a theological approach and as I wholeheartedly endorse such a methodology, I simply have to assert that this is the very best possibility in a range of possibilities. So, for Chris’s students and / or anyone else interested in learning the content and message of the Old Testament, this is the one place to start.
