The November Biblioblogging Top 50

11/30/2008 3 comments

Bishop Wrong has it.  Number one shocked me.  In fact, I am aghast the McGrath got booted so severely.  Even more surprising was Lombatti’s decline in slots (though he’s still in my top 10).  But the fact that Tilling is still at 21- well that’s just immoral.  He’s definitely top 10.  Still, Job was right to plunge 20 spots and Norelli 30 (in fact I think he’s quit).  But the odd rise of Michael Holcomb… that’s just bizarre.

What Really Happened in the Aftermath of Proposition 8’s Adoption?

11/30/2008 11 comments

Here are just a few of the things that took place after Proposition 8 was adopted as reported today in the Christian Examiner:

- two lesbians went to the pulpit at Mount Hope Church [in Michigan] where they began making out in front of the congregants, which included children.

- A Bash Back chapter in Olympia, Wash., bragged that they targeted a Mormon church where they glued their door locks and sprawled anarchist messages in spray paint “over their boring veneer.”

- Marjorie Christoffersen, daughter of the owners of the Los Angeles restaurant El Coyote, left town after hundreds of protesters targeted her parent’s eatery because she made a personal $100 contribution to the Yes on 8 fund. Police in riot gear were called to restore order. Gay rights activists also began a campaign to post negative restaurant reviews online. The restaurant employs several gays and lesbians who said they were taken aback by the protests.

- A Palm Springs news crew captured an unruly protest group ripping an oversized cross from a woman’s hands and then stomping on it. A reporter trying to interview the woman, Phyllis Burgess, about the incident had to move the woman to safety as the crowd encircled them while shouting.

- Vandals converted a Yes on 8 sign into a swastika at a church in Riverside.

- A Carlsbad man was arrested Nov. 3 for punching two elderly neighbors in the face after they confronted him about trespassing on their property to place a No on 8 sign in front of their Yes on 8 sign.

- In Fresno, a prominent pastor, who had campaigned publicly for Proposition 8, received credible death threats that also targeted the mayor, another traditional marriage supporter. The threats were deemed credible enough for the police department to assign officers to protect the men. The church was also targeted for vandalism.

- In Modesto, a Protect Marriage volunteer received 16 stitches under his eye after a man tried to steal his Yes on 8 signs outside a local church where he was waiting to distribute them after Mass.

- A week before the election, a San Jose couple, who posted a Yes on 8 sign in their front lawn, discovered that someone spray-painted “No on 8” on their car, their garage and the garage of their neighbor.

- Also in San Jose, vandals painted the back window of an SUV with the words “Bigot Live Here,” with an arrow pointing to a house boasting a Yes on 8 sign.

- In other areas of the state, cars were keyed, signs defaced and a block was thrown through the window of an elderly couple who displayed a Yes on 8 sign in their yard.

It all sounds like Kristallnacht to me. Perhaps ‘Bash Back’ is the new SS, using terror and intimidation to achieve their goals.  There are many other disturbing examples in the report cited above.

Will the 36th Biblical Studies Carnival be the Last?

11/30/2008 2 comments

I wonder aloud that very question because 1) the Carnival home page hasn’t been updated in a good while; and 2) there are no further Carnival’s announced; and 3) finally, there are no further Carnival hosts announced.  Have the Carnival’s seen their final months?  Will the end of 2008 be the end of the Carnival as we know it?

Does anyone know?

Maybe They Would Like to be Spit On Too…

11/30/2008 8 comments

Orthodox Jews in Jersualem that is, who have been around and about lately spitting on Franciscans.  Just imagine the outcry if Christians wandering around Jerusalem started spitting on Jews.  Cries of racism and anti-semitism would fill the air.  Let Franciscans, though, get a face full of Jewish spit and you can’t find a word of it in the American Press.  It’s only the Italians who bother to tell the despicable tale.

What’s so galling about the disposition of some adherents of Orthodox Judaism is their apparent belief that they can treat others as poorly as they wish but no one should treat them badly or even whisper the fact they they are just as racist as their foes.

A friend of mine and I once got into a fairly heated argument about the Jews.  He said, ‘what you don’t understand is that they bring a lot of this on themselves.’  I said, ‘that’s the same thing as saying a rape victim brought it upon herself.  You can’t blame the victim for the vile ignorant evil of their attacker.’  Hence, whatever cause the Orthodox may give, they will forever remain unjustified in their wicked treatment of the priests following the order of St. Francis.  The ‘persecuted’ have become the ‘persecutors’.  As is always the case.  Even among the Jews.

Free At Last? Maybe Not…

11/30/2008 Leave a comment

And what did they conclude?

That’s very Brunnerian of him! You can read the very brief report here.

You Only Have 12 Hours Left

To get me your Carnival suggestions.  Now, mind you, I may or may not use them- but you increase your chances (hopes and dreams of happy inclusion) if you point out to me your witty and wondrous work.  The 36th Biblical Studies Carnival will go live at 12:01 a.m. December 1.

If You Can’t Persuade ‘em, Beat ‘em

Reminiscent of Chris Tilling’s ‘Drive by baptism’ methodology, a ’street preacher’ in Florida decided to thump folk with the Bible, literally.

Police say 48-year-old Mark Alan Sutto was delivering a street sermon when he interfered with the Turkey Trot 10K on Thursday by shouting at runners, getting in their way and waving a large Bible in their path. An arrest report says Sutto refused to stop disturbing the run, even after several warnings. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. He remained in jail Saturday on $150 bail.

Maybe that’s just where he belongs. Maybe he’s destined for a jail ministry.  It seems he’s now surrounded by like minded folk (i.e., criminals).
