Similarly, other smarmy comments were made during the session itself by at least one of the presenters and the audience must well have been quite odd.

According to the earlier live blog of a Qeiyafa conference (the same conference?) on ochesnut’s website, Garfinkle had (humorously?) pronounced the low chronology “dead”. Dever’s reference to Finkelstein was evidently a riff on that comment, and was most likely meant very lightly as humor.
yes, it should be noted that Dever’s comment did illicit groans from the crowd and that Garfinkle’s proclamation was accompanied by a slide of a graveyard.
