The Human Cost of the Economic Crisis

October 6, 2008 · 1 Comment

When people despair, they do horrifying things.  And when they feel utterly hopeless, and can see no end in sight, they sometimes do those horrifying things to others as well as themselves.  CNN reports

A man distraught because he could not find work shot and killed his mother-in-law, his wife and three sons and then killed himself inside a home in an upscale San Fernando Valley neighborhood, police said.  Authorities said the man had an MBA in finance but appeared to have been unemployed for several months and had worked for major accounting firms, such as Price Waterhouse, police said.  …  The mother-in-law was 70; her daughter was 39; and the sons were 19, 12 and 7, Moore said. All were found inside bedrooms. A handgun, which was bought September 16, was recovered, he said.

Good heavens.  What can be said of such things besides what’s said at the opening of Lamentations…

This truly is an American tragedy. How sad
for a well educated individual to have been put
into such a seemingly hopeless situation.

Today the John McCain campaign announced they
must “turn the page” of their campaign from
the economic crisis to character attacks on
Barack Obama in order to win the election.

What a pity we can’t turn the page, for this
family, back to a better time so that they
    might still be alive.
