Tiberias
Dr. Cytryn-Silverman is planning a three week excavation season in March, 2009. Although the excavation will be conducted on, as well as adjacent to Prof. Hirschfeld’s site, it is a new project based on research questions derived from Dr. Cytryn-Silverman’s interests and field of study.
The funding for this first season is currently small, but if this initial season succeeds in justifying the investment, it will hopefully only be the first of many. I would like to invite those of you who previously have worked in Tiberias, and those who have not yet had the opportunity to do so, to join in making the opening season possible.
The main focus of the 2009 season will be the colonnaded building, defining its phases, dating and architecture. In future seasons, the plan will be to expand the squares excavated during the 2009 season as well as focus on understanding the architecture and urbanization process (Roman-Byzantine-Islamic), as it is reflected in the stratigraphy of the site.
The 2009 season will begin on March 22nd and conclude on April 8th, (work in the field will be Sunday-Thursday, apart from the third week, which will end on Wednesday). Due to the shortness of the season and its proximity to the Jewish holiday of Passover (April 8-15, 2009), it is highly recommended that you register and schedule your travel arrangements as soon as possible. I would advise joining for all three weeks but for other available options, please see the application form. The expedition will be staying at the Aviv Hotel in Tiberias, in walking distance from the site. The cost of participation per person, per week is $500 for a single room or $400 for sharing a double room (Check in to hotel Saturday evening, check out Thursday noon, including meals from Sunday breakfast through Thursday lunch, all field trips and lectures. Student discounts are available; camping $80 per person, per week).
