The Madness of Good King Ben

Ben asserts (I hope tongue in cheek) that the LXX did not exist in the first century (CE I presume). There are immense and insurmountable problems with Ben’s hypothesis. First, there’s more than enough textual evidence to support the existence of a collection of Greek texts which were translations of Hebrew texts later called the Septuagint and the Hebrew Bible respectively.

Second, the argument that the NT writers couldn’t have quoted the ‘LXX’ is nonsensical. Of course they could have. Or they could have utilized a textual tradition now lost. Or they could have paraphrased the Greek Old Testament they had. Or they could have made their own translation of Hebrew texts. The supposition implied by Ben that the LXX isn’t exactly quoted by NT authors and so it must not have existed in untenable.

Now if by LXX Ben is talking about ‘Ralf’s’ edition he may have a point- since there is no such beast as ‘Ralf’s’. But if he means to insist that the edition of ‘Rahlfs’ is nothing more than the product of a rich imagination, he will have a very difficult time convincing anyone.

Ben has chosen to plow a field which will yield only briars and thistles and stones. Indeed, he has chosen to plow the seashore.

  1. I’m honored to have stirred the grand master; a little provocation is good for the soul. ;-)

Can you help with the textual evidence of a pre-NT “collection” that we can comfortably call “the LXX”? I think you will run into problems of scope and inclusion.

If I understood PW right (and I think I butchered his tea-time conversation pretty well), he is saying that NT writers were likely using Greek translations of certain writings, but we no longer have those translations. We have clear evidence of Greek manuscripts of Scripture predating the NT, but to conceive of them as a “the LXX” even a as we know it (even a proto-Ralf) is clearly anachronistic.

Amen to your point about Ralf’s; double Judges certainly proves that point.

Plowing on the beach is fun.

PS: Wait till tomorrow; I have an even more scandalous post waiting.

  2. sure- see the lxx fragments and portions from the dead sea, and if you are looking for a codex- you won’t find one- even of the hebrew bible. the simple fact is, there were greek copies of the OT used throughout the hellenistic world and these came to be known as the lxx. there is no disputing this- the evidence is everywhere.

  3. oh- and i commend to your attention the works of mogens muller on the subject.
