The United Methodist Church passed a resolution at its recent General Conference opposing the teaching of Creation Science and Intelligent Design in public schools. The statement, passed during a 10-day conference in Fort Worth, Texas, that ended May 2, put the denomination on record “as opposing the introduction of any faith-based theories such as Creationism or Intelligent Design into the science curriculum of our public schools.” “Creationism and Intelligent Design are appropriate topics in public education classes such as comparative religion, literature, or philosophy since scientific method incorporates critical thinking processes,” said the resolution adopted by a vote of 508 to 323. “All truth is God’s truth. The promotion of religion or any particular religion in the public schools is contrary to the First Amendment.
Kudos to them. This is very sensible indeed.

Guess that makes it official. Engineering (Engineering = Science+ID) and technology don’t exist according to theology!
Even the Discovery Institute in Seattle does not support the teaching of ID in schools as a formal part of the curriculum. What the church should promote is the teaching of the spectrum of arguments in the church so believers have the information they need to come to a reasonable conclusion.
Sensible indeed. Though I can’t help but be thankful that the denomination I belong to(Southern Baptist) doesn’t have this kind of hierarchy, out there passing resolutions in order to help me remove “ambiguities that Christians face while wrestling with differences between literal Biblical interpretations and current scientific understandings.”……wait a minute……
ah yes- we SBC folk spend our time on resolutions regarding Disney and women staying in the kitchen and such things. things that the world really needs to hear!
Do the Methodists believe someone (a human) was “in the beginning” to observe the facts and formulated a hypothesis and tested it? Observation “after the fact” is just as valid, with ID…creationism, being built upon a text is a different matter….
