Piles of Foreskins

Darrell asks a good question when he asks where Saul got the idea of demanding a pile of foreskins from David as a bridal price. Frankly I had never really pondered either the text nor the question Darrell raises about it. So, why does Saul want a pile of that stuff? Where’d he get the idea? And, most importantly, what’s the point, theologically, of a pile of foreskins?

And as an aside, with no disrespect to Saul, he always strikes me as a sort of serial killer who collects his victims body parts. The creepy factor of this story is 8 out of 10.

  1. Maybe it was for a really popular ring toss type game that David enjoyed. :-)

  2. as the kids say— eeeewwwwww

  3. Don’t worry about showing disrespect to Saul; he was certifiable. And when the cops hauled him away, the neighbors would not have been saying “But he was such a nice, quiet man.”

  4. In his very funny book on David’s life (God Knows) Joseph Heller described a conversation between Saul and David, after David brought the foreskins, in which Saul tells David that he expected David to bring foreskins that he had removed from the Philistines after they were already dead …
