March 26th fell on a Saturday in 1524 and the printer Froschauer was hard at work finalizing Zwingli’s most recent book, Der Hirt.  Once Huldrych turned over the final pages (the letter of dedication to Jakob Schurtanner, Pastor in Appenzell- who died in 1525 and was one of the earliest preachers of Reformed theology after Zwingli) the book was ready.  Though not long (55 pages in the critical edition), it still offers some intensely useful insight on the pastoral office.  It’s still a delight to read and I confess it to be one of my favorite.  It’s even available in English, so that ‘you are without excuse’ if you fail to take advantage of it.
